HIDDEN BENEFITS for new Moms
Scientists have discovered that breast-fed babies and bottle-fed babies grow very different types of digestive bacteria - and this may explain why breast is best.
Poop analysis shows that breast-fed babies have higher levels of some bugs called bifidobacteria which are associated with a lower risk of gastric infections and allergy.
Some studies show that these friendly bacteria release natural antibiotics which help fight infection. There's good evidence, too that having a lot of bifidobacteria in their belly means your baby is much less likely to get eczema, asthma, and other allergies.
Bottle-fed babies, however, have fewer bifidobacteria and more clostridia - a not-so friendly bacteria that is associated with a higher risk of allergy, tummy upsets, and other health problems. Some formula manufacturers are now developing products that both encourage the growth of bacteria already living in the digestive system (prebiotics), and contain live friendly bacteria (probiotics).
