Baby Swimming

Learning to swim is hugely beneficial for child's health, safety and physical development. Young babies are naturally able to hold their breath underwater due to an instinct called the "diving reflex", which they loose later on, so there are real benefits in starting swimming early. Most babies love the water and think the lessons are great fun. Moreover, swimming helps develop muscular control and agility, as well as promoting relaxation so babies tend to sleep soundly afterwards. Many classes will accept babies before their first round of immunizations, but parents are advised to discuss this with their health visitor or GP. What does it involve? Classes teach both parents and infants to be confident and relaxed in the pool, demonstrating appropriate holds, and showing babies how to use their legs and arms in the water. Some classes, but not all, teach babies how to swim short distances underwater, so if this is something you are interested in, check with the teacher before you sign up. In more advanced classes, babies who are able to sit, can be taught to jump in the water and resurface.
